Our emotions
are the most present, pressing and sometimes painful force in our lives. Emotions
dictate our thoughts, motives and actions. Hence we need to be emotionally
healthy to feel happy and have a sense of purpose in our lives. Being healthy
emotionally involves having a measurable control over your emotions rather than
being at its mercy.
Here are eight needs you must meet to be emotionally
healthy:
1. You must learn to feel safe and
secure within your space or territory.
2. You must regularly give and receive
quality attention.
3. You must feel a sense of influence
and control over your life.
4. You must feel part of a wider
community
5. You must enjoy friendship, fun love
and intimacy with significant people.
6. You must feel a sense of status;
basically feel you have a recognizable role in life.
7. You must feel a sense of competence
and achievement.
8. You must be occupied to avoid
stagnation, boredom and to enhance self-esteem.
When these
needs are met adequately, you will have full control over your emotions. You
will not be rattled or disoriented by every challenge. You will feel your life
is in order and purposeful. Not meeting these needs leaves us feeling that life
is pointless and leaves us open to emotional problems. So work at meeting these
needs and you will be feeding the right emotion with the ‘right food’.
